8th Piece // Goldenrod City // Video (Action)

[The screen shows a very steady, clear feed of Yuugi. He's not saying anything for a moment, having trouble breaking out of the lethargic silence he's stuck in. But in the meantime, please note how he's sitting in a chair, outside, with a brick wall to his back. The why should become clear as he finally starts explaining himself.]

Well, the Mareep eggs Bakuto pushed me to keep hatched early yesterday, so I assume most of the others I sold have, too. I hope all of them are doing okay. So I thought I'd ask about it.

[He pauses, trying to form what else he wants to say. But it falls apart half-formed as something jolts him up in his seat. The view swerves, showing Bakuto flopped on her back in the grass, apparently sunbathing. The culprits of Yuugi's shock though, would be a pair of pint-sized sheep zooming under his feet. The second calls some angry "maaa"s at the one in the lead, making a B-line for "Mama". A third is right on their heels and a fourth trudges along in their trail, until a hand gingerly scoops it off the ground. A second later Yuugi is back in view, the last Mareep lamb sprawled over his legs.

But even with a fuzzball on his lap, Yuugi's not looking happy.]

Ah, sorry... I just, also wondered if anyone had the latest news on Danny Fenton. Is he recovering okay? Or... has someone else been hit by the delivery box trick? I know the attack on the game corner didn't work, but I still want to hear no one else is gon-

[Ah. Please excuse him. He just caught himself and shut off the feed before he could stumble again. Suddenly just focusing on the new babies, seems so much better than broadcasting...]

What?

[Varon looks clearly confused and now finally out of the caverns, he's able to catch up more on a few things.]

What attack? Can ya fill me in, please? I missed th' news. Ah, nice mareeps.

[And here's Malik, returning from training (and then shopping) - he's kept to himself as he adjusts to the Pokémon Bakura left behind, while planning also how to make the most both of this void and the recent attacks.

He's almost - ugh - indebted to Bakura and Cobra now. Because they've given him a marvelous opportunity. He can be the ~friend Yuugi needs.~]

I caught the end of that.

[He tosses Yuugi a soda bottle.]

The proud parent needs to keep up his energy.

Ah, I don't know the details. That Cobra man tried to blackmail money, but his bomb threat didn't work out.

But- If, he's at fault- he might have hurt someone anyways...

[He trails off, frowning, until the Mareep in his lap - Sanko, if he judges by her laziness - rolls over and reminds him of the compliment.]

Thanks. I planned to sell all of them before they hatched, but their mom wasn't happy with me giving one away, so I kept hold of the rest. ...can't say I regret it, though.

[Grk- That is. Malik walked in on that stumble, huh? Of course...

He manages to see the bottle coming, though, and catches, lets it sleep, and catches it again just before it lands on his lap-reep's head. Here, have a hollow smile, Malik.]

Thanks... You want to sit?

[They, are the only (human) housemates now, after all, and even ignoring history it's weird not to talk.

And he's even saved the trouble of thinking of something to say - Yuugi spots another fluffball hiding under the extra chair, and points with the bottle. It's hard to believe the little guy already lost his brother and sister, but given the sneaking...]

Watch out though. Shiro will try and throw sand on your feet, or shock you, if you don't look out.

Funny how that works out. I mean, that's pretty scary, yeah, but not impossible and damn, I miss all the good stuff. I've been outta the loop a bit. Ya know, collectin' samples, doin' study, that sort of thing.

[His two eevee are playing in the background. One rolls forward while the other one tries to jump before they take off in a chase.]

Mom's...I never could understand 'em. Heh, guess it's an instinctual thing.

And reveal his hiding place? Never.

[He settles carefully into the chair, seemingly relaxed, and pulls a water out of his grocery bag for himself. It's these little things that feel oddest about Johto, actually: if he wants something, he doesn't have anyone to send for it. Hopefully that'll change soon.

Taking a sip of his water to buy himself some time, Malik glances over at Yuugi and wonders if he'll start a conversation on his own. Probably not....How rude, to be suspicious of him.

It's not like he assisted with this bomb plot or anything~]

This - isn't the kind of place where injustice triumphs, you know.

-well there, wasn't much to miss. I didn't get most of the details until after the fact. Just heard enough to worry.

[Like angry attackers. Or friends blowing up...

But he manages a weak grin at the comment.]

You'd think, but she hasn't done much with them since. She just wants them around, apparently.

Yeah, but he will, at some point. There's no point to traps that don't spring, right?

[...Yuugi's, aware of the irony there, and that Malik's looking at him. But watching the little guys running under foot, and comforting the newly adopted Pokémon drifting around the house sapped what he had to give. Much less, working his own feelings out.

So, the odd sort of comfort Malik offers? It pulls Yuugi from the vacant Mareep watching, at least. For one curious look.]

...I guess not. It sounds like there's a lot of people here, willing to stop attacks like that, or help when someone's hurt. As long as that's true.

Spada -- um, that's what I decided to name the Buneary -- is doing fine. Actually, he's really spirited... [An awkward pause, because he's not so sure about Danny. He didn't know the guy, but-- that feed--] Um... I'm sorry... I don't know anything about Danny, but I haven't heard anything more about delivery boxes. Everything was fine here.

Huh, still it's bad when it's still bein' pushed through the grapevine. So anyway, mom's not doin' much with the chicks, eh? She seems pretty social, I'd think. Maybe she's wantin' around for the attention. Gettin' away from her is gonna be tough.

[He thinks for a moment.]

Has she attacked anyone that came near?

[Malik's going to let that first statement slide. Responding would feel like taking bait. Instead he gives Yuugi a gentle smile.]

That's right. And your friend will be fine.

...he is your friend, huh. What's he like?

[Cobra'd struck Malik's first blow against Yuugi. By accident. Malik is not sure how he feels about this. Yuugi is his target, and if things progress beyond collateral damage he'll have to seriously reconsider his current pacing.]

Spada, huh? It's great he's turning out so well.

[It's so strange, thinking there's a named baby of his own young Buneary running around. But it's nicer thinking about that, than what happened to Danny...

He manages a relieved look all the same, when Luca answered his question.]

That's good... It'd be horrible, if more people were hit that way. And if it happened more than once...

[He considers the question, once the surprise wears off, and then shakes his head.]

No, but then we've been at home since they hatched, so me, my housemate, and our Pokémon have been the only ones around. Maybe she'd get mad if it was someone she didn't know.

Ah. That sounds pretty natural t' me. I wouldn't worry much.

...yeah, I guess so. We only talked a few times, but he was one of the first to help me here.

He sighs, but starts out of the muse when Sanko jumps out of his lap, making a slow stroll over to Mama Bakuto, despite a brother and sister chasing each other around her path. He- could probably take a note, from how she doesn't let near-getting run over faze her.

While finally opening his water bottle-] Ah, Danny's cool. He was pretty upfront about what he thought, but, laid-back...

[Malik watches the sheep, apparently finding them fascinating.]

That'll help him. He doesn't sound like someone who'd stay down for long.

[Though that mention of "one of the first"....

Malik wonders whether he should address the ~~tapir~~ elephant in the room or not.]

.....I - miss him too, you know. Not your friend Danny, but.

[He takes a drink.]

...I guess not, nope. I just hope it wears off as they grow. We can't stay in the house forever.

We're lucky. If you really want to repay him, we just have to wait to meet him again, and thank him then!

Let's take him to the most expensive pastry shop in town! And then maybe to a movie. He's into horror, right?

...he'd probably like that. And I don't know what's playing, but we could probably rent something!

[And it's nice, at least imagining it could be something like that. It makes it a little easier to ignore both of them were missing when he's from, one way or another.

Before he teeters into reacting to that reality, he shakes his head.]

But first, I want to stay here and raise these, ah, Mareep. And see if Bakura doesn't show up again.

[...something's off here. Instead of becoming the friend Yuugi can rely on for support, Yuugi started attempting to become that for him. Somehow.

Oh, that Mutou Yuugi. How he despises you.]

Sounds like a plan. They've all taken to you already, it seems.

[And he does smile like nothing could possibly be more charming.]

We might start wishing we had a bit more of a lawn!

Ah-ha, I wouldn't judge me by just Sanko. I still have some work to do with the rest.

[Granted, the fact he gives them coddling Mama won't probably helps. But apparently Good Behavior isn't a settled thing yet, given little Shiro's sensing the pair are deep in talk...]

But, yeah... Isami seems willing to help watch Bakuto, so I might be able to keep too many more eggs from popping up, but still... If I get too many more, I might ask Souji-san about letting them play at the Centre-

[And don't look now but suddenly baby Take Down on Malik's boot from below!]

Malik jolts nearly out of his chair, curbing the impulse to kick the baby just in time. He does, however, end up settling back in slowly, chuckling.]

[Guess who jumped with you, Malik? And before the baby can stop basking in its success and hide again, Yuugi's gotten up and caught him.]

Sorry, that's the one I warned you about... Ichiro! Niko!

[-this traitorous breeder! He's caught the attention of the rambunctious, searching pair across the yard, and set Shiro back on the ground once they see him.

As expected, their chasing their little brother in a flash, likely looking for vengeance for some earlier prank. Yuugi watches them, making sure they don't actually get rough, has he mumbles.]

I have to admit, I was wondering about you...

[He gives Malik a side glance, before catching himself and smiling.]

Are you planning on staying here? I mean, you're welcome to, but I thought trainers are supposed to challenge gyms.

[...heaven for forbid, does he sound disappointed at the fact?]

[He'd hate to disappoint his friend!

Malik shrugs, watching the Mareep at play.]

That's the idea, but....I'm having second thoughts. It seems a little arbitrary, doesn't it?

I don't need that outside proof to consider myself a good trainer. Besides, I like it here. It's been fun, and I don't want to give up on that just because - well, because Johto had other plans for one of us.

[He runs a hand through his bangs, then immediately fixes them.]

Maybe I should get a job! I need to earn my keep if I'm renting a room.

And learn more two-player games.
